Alternate Methods for Concrete Swimming Pool Construction

There are several different methods for building an inground swimming pool using cement|cinder|concrete block.

One method is to dig only the pool shelf first. This would be the level area for the top three feet of the swimming pool. The dig would be approximately two feet larger than the outside dimensions of the swimming pool. Then a footer trench would be dug around the perimeter and poured with concrete for the cement/cinder block to sit on. The footer should start at the inside dimensions of the pool and extend two foot wide and 12 inches deep.  Cement block would then be laid around the perimeter of the pool to acquire a 3 foot tall block wall.  The block cavities would then be filled with concrete. After allowing time for the wall to cure, the hopper for the deep end of the pool is dug out. The hopper area can be compacted and troweled smooth, or can be layered with concrete or vermiculite. This method of construction will require fitting a vinyl liner inside the swimming pool.

Another method is to dig the pool to the desired size and depth adding for the

wall and floor thickness. Transitions from deep to shallow should be kept on a minimum slope to aid in pouring the concrete floor. Dig a trench around the perimeter 12 inches deep x 12 inches wide. A #3 rebar grid can then be tied in the floor prior to pouring the concrete. The ends of the rebar should be turned up around the perimeter and allowed to rise above the concrete level of the floor. This will ensure that the walls are tied into the floor when the block are placed. The entire pool floor is then poured 6 inches thick . This will give you a 12″ wide x 18″ thick footer around the perimeter to support the cement block walls. After the floor has ample time to cure, concrete block can be laid around the perimeter to form the swimming pool walls. Fill the block cavities with concrete. Construction of this type can be finished with plaster material to provide a water tight finish to the interior of the swimming pool. Alternately a vinyl liner may be installed in the pool.
