Cost Of An In Ground Swimming Pool

March 2nd, 2010 No comments

Present economic conditions are changing people’s ideas on how to enjoy their leisure time. Where many would have opted for a vacation away from home , more and more are turning to ways to enjoy staying at home. Swimming pools are as popular as ever.  As always, an inground pool can be very costly , and most are looking for cheaper alternatives.
Veteran DIYers area always up to a challenge and building new toys can be as entertaining as the finished product.
Anyone that’s checked on the prices of a new gunite/shotcrete swimming pool has to agree , the prices can be astronomical. Don’t give up on your dream just yet. I have built this site to help people realize there dream and have that beautiful backyard pool they always wanted.
I’m going to give you some figures to work with . Today is March 2nd 2010 and I am in the process of helping a DIYer in my area to build a gunite/shotcrete swimming pool. Basically he is acting as contractor and subbing most of the work out,
These are actual realistic costs that you can work with. This in South Carolina so price everything as it may vary significantly by state.
Cost to build an in ground pool:

  • Forming                                                                          $400.00
  • Digging                                                                             $750.00
  • Skimmer     2 @$90.00                                          $180.00
  • Drains            2@$20.00                                             $40.00
  • Misc. Plumbing  (just stubbed)                      $40.00
  • Rebar            190@$2.80                                          $532.00
  • Rebar (labor)  190@$3.00                                  $570.00
  • Shotcrete (material)  31yds @$118.00       $3658.00
  • Shotcrete (labor)   31yds @$75.00               $2325.00
  • Light Niche                                                                   $55.00
  • Ground wire (roll)                                                   $180.00

Total right now $8730.00

This is not the total finished price. This is what he has invested as it stands.

As it stands right now we are at a complete shotcrete pool shell. Things that remain to be done is long plumbing, back filling, setting tile, grading, forming and pouring deck, plastering and setting equipment. I will add the prices to this page as work progresses. By the way , had he contracted a pool builder for this project it it would have been in the $34,000 range, completed of course. He got estimates  before we started. I estimate the finished project to come in under $20,000.00 for a savings of $14,000.00 over having a pool company build it.

Note than in Lexington county SC , no permit is required for an inground swimming pool. Make sure you check with your licensing agency as permits and plans may be required.

This is what he has invested in a 18′ x 36′ pool 3′ to 8′ deep. At present he has subbed out all the labor. The shell is completed , including the steps and 2 benches.
